Studies have shown that a vegetarian and even a vegan diet can improve obesity and health issues. But studies also show that vegetarians and especially vegans have raging levels of homocysteine, an amino acid that contributes to heart attacks and brain damage. Also, the omega 3 to omega 6 ratio of veggie peeps is completely out of whack which also increases heart attack risk.
The correct ratio is important for the production of DHA and EPA which blocks 3 of the serious steps towards a heart attack (see picture). The way to get this ratio to where it should be is to eat ground flax seed (since these meat haters won’t eat the other great source: oily fish like sardines, salmon etc). The homocysteine levels can be brought down by B12 supplementation. These 2 considerations outline the reason why mortality rates are equal between meat eaters and vegan/vegetarians.
